The director of the CNIO compares her situation to the extermination of the Jews.
It is worth noting that this letter has been released on the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz's liberation.
The director of the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas finds herself between a rock and a hard place. In a letter addressed to the CNIO's Board of Trustees, María Blasco has denounced the campaign of insults, attacks, and defamation she claims to be receiving.
In addition to that, she says she has even been a victim of "death threats." This is confirmed by El Debate. In the letter, Blasco denounces the speed with which a "campaign of misinformation and rumors" has circulated through communication channels and social media.
According to the media outlet, Blasco claims that this phenomenon is reminiscent of the "dehumanization" suffered by Jews in Nazi Germany. It is noteworthy that this letter has been released on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Due to this situation, an extraordinary meeting will be held where decisions could be made regarding the retention or dismissal of some executives.
This meeting follows several weeks of controversy during which the research center has been under scrutiny. It occurs after half of the research heads requested Blasco's dismissal and the initiation of an international process to select her replacement.
In her letter, María Blasco maintains that "each and every one of the alleged" issues reported in recent weeks pertains to the managing director. This is according to the CNIO's statutes and the current "dual leadership" structure in its management. She also emphasizes that "not everything is relative."
"That everything is relative is what those who disdain empirical evidence want, those who disdain science, and those who take advantage of the public's misinformation about scientific matters." This, from her point of view, is "to carry out their wicked plans." The woman asserted that these "hoaxes" only damaged her personal and scientific reputation.
CNIO's Irregularities
This is an organization that depends on the Ministry of Science headed by Diana Morant. It faces several irregularities that haven't gone unnoticed.
The controversy revolves around key aspects, such as her role as honorary president of a foundation related to the PSOE. Also, the appointment of her sister by Minister Saiz, and the use of resources intended for cancer research to finance artistic acquisitions and pay high salaries.
All these controversies have taken a toll on Blasco, as several scientists from the center have decided to leave, according to El Debate.
According to the media outlet, there is a list of all those who have made this decision. The situation arises that some of them were seven with great international prestige.
