Albares proposes sending the Guardia Civil to support the Palestinian Authority.
José Manuel Albares suggests that the Guardia Civil be incorporated within the framework of an EU mission at the border crossing
José Manuel Albares is once again in the spotlight due to the new proposal. Spain is to participate in a mission with the European Union in Rafah, following the truce between Israel and Hamas, to which it would contribute Civil Guard personnel. The deployment would take place at the border crossing to ensure the circulation and access of humanitarian materials to the Gaza Strip.
Albares himself explained this in statements to the media upon his arrival at the meeting of European foreign ministers. He did so by pointing out that this force would be deployed in Rafah, the only border crossing between Egypt and Palestine (Gaza).
He indicated that it aims to "help control the entry and exit of people."
This way, the Foreign Minister expressed his intention to join the mission that the Union is outlining in Rafah. "The Civil Guard will be present at the meeting," Albares asserted.
He also expressed Spain's support for deploying a mission to help "with the entry and exit of people."
The truth is that this new proposal hasn't been well received by a large part of Spaniards. Many have criticized the deployment of agents to Rafah when they didn't arrive in Valencia in a timely manner.
This has sparked controversy upon learning of the minister's new proposal.
Regarding the figures and details of the European Union's deployment, in which Spain would be involved, Albares has sent information to Kaja Kallas. The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, as well as about his meetings with representatives of the Palestinian Authority.
Spain actively participates in various military missions under the framework of the European Union, mainly in African territories. Additionally, the Civil Guard is integrated into different international operations.
An example of this is the presence of agents from the Armed Institute in areas near Rafah. For instance, Lebanon, where they are assigned to the UN contingent, currently under the leadership of a Spanish general.
Meanwhile, Albares has announced the commitment to send humanitarian material to Gaza, with an investment of 50 million euros (approximately 55 million dollars).
This Monday, Albares rejected Donald Trump's proposal that Jordan and Egypt receive more than one and a half million people displaced from the Gaza Strip. The minister emphasized that "the place for Gazans is Gaza" and highlighted that "the European Union must support the population of the Strip and focus on reconstruction."
Before participating in the EU foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels, Albares stated: "The place for the Palestinians of Gaza is in the Gaza Strip. The priority must be to help them with their basic needs and contribute to reconstruction."
