The United States formalizes its withdrawal from the WHO starting in January 2026.

From the White House, Trump has defended the decision as a necessary step to protect the interests of the United States.

The UN has confirmed the official notification from the United States regarding its withdrawal from the WHO, effective as of January 22, 2026.

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the United Nations, indicated that the organization received the resignation letter on January 22, 2025.

The withdrawal process takes one year from the notification, according to the international rules governing the World Health Organization.

The WHO regretted the decision and urged President Trump to reconsider in order to maintain dialogue on global health.

"It is crucial to work together to protect the health and well-being of millions of people worldwide," expressed a WHO spokesperson.

The United States' withdrawal is a significant blow to the WHO, as the country is one of its largest funders.

Donald Trump already attempted to withdraw from the WHO during his first term, citing mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020, Trump halted the United States' financial contributions to the WHO, accusing it of being influenced by China.

The withdrawal was not finalized at the time because Joe Biden reversed the measure after taking office in January 2021.

The WHO relies heavily on financial contributions from its member states, including those from the United States.

The decision reflects Donald Trump's unilateral approach to international policy, highlighting the national interest of the United States.

However, progressive experts point out that global cooperation is crucial to addressing health challenges like pandemics.

The move also raises concerns among the United States' progressive allies, who see weakened multilateral collaboration.

Trump Administration's Response to Criticism

From the White House, Trump has defended the decision as a necessary step to protect the interests of the United States.

"It's time for the United States to stop funding organizations that don't work in our favor," declared the president.

The administration assures that the funds allocated to the WHO will be redirected to national health initiatives.
