The judge in the 'Errejón case' responds to criticism over the questioning of Elisa Mouliaá
The judge was surprised by the 'avalanche of criticism' received for using words that, according to him, come from the complaint itself.
Judge Adolfo Carretero, in charge of the investigation of the case involving Íñigo Errejón, for an alleged sexual assault, has defended the interrogation conducted with actress Elisa Mouliaá on January 16.
In an interview with Antena 3, Carretero stated: "If the complaint contains vulgar terms, well, I am not to blame for that. I am very sorry if someone might have felt offended, but certainly my intention is not to offend a victim, because I have the utmost respect for all women."
The magistrate emphasized that all the questions asked during the interrogation "are related to the facts." He explained that when addressing statements mentioning someone "pulls out a penis," it is pertinent to investigate. Since "if someone does that, it is to attempt even a much greater crime than the one committed."
Carretero acknowledged that some people might feel "annoyed" by the tone of the interrogation. But he emphasized that "perhaps many people don't know what a judicial statement is." He highlighted that his technique consists of "investigating," "counteracting," and "revealing contradictions."
"What I do is first have them confirm the entirety of the complaint. Then I go line by line, point by point, meticulously, breaking it down," he added.
The judge also expressed surprise at the "avalanche of criticism" received for using words that, according to him, come from the complaint itself. "I am amazed that in the 21st century, for saying the word 'ass,' which is simply, let's say, the slang for 'buttock,' that can cause a scandal," he declared.
However, he assured that he has "no problem" avoiding the use of such language in the future.
The CGPJ Opens an Informative File
Following the dissemination of the interrogation, the General Council of the Judiciary has opened an informative file on Judge Carretero. After receiving more than 900 complaints about his conduct during Mouliaá's statement.
These complaints arose after media outlets released the recording of the interrogation. In which the magistrate asked questions that caused controversy, questioning the veracity of the actress's statements.
In reply to the criticism, Carretero has expressed his intention to seek protection from the CGPJ. Arguing that he merely did his job and asked about the facts stated in the complaint.
Sources close to the magistrate indicated that it is "logical" that some questions might be uncomfortable, but they emphasized that the judge believes he acted correctly.
