Toni Pérez Closes the Institutional Act of Inhumation of Rafael Altamira
Pérez has highlighted Altamira's figure as 'one of the most relevant intellectuals in the history of Spain'
The President of the Alicante Provincial Council, Toni Pérez, closed yesterday the institutional act of the inhumation of Rafael Altamira, presided over by H.M. King Felipe VI, at the El Campello cemetery. The remains of the illustrious jurist, along with those of his wife, Pilar Redondo, now rest in a family mausoleum, thus closing a chapter of exile that lasted more than 70 years.
In his speech, Pérez highlighted Altamira's figure as "one of the most relevant intellectuals in the history of Spain, a universal Alicante native whose legal, literary, and pedagogical legacy has enriched both Europe and America." He emphasized his commitment to democratic values, peace, and justice, defining him as a thinker of solid convictions and an immense intellectual production.
The event was attended by the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, who announced that the Generalitat has financed the costs of exhumation and repatriation of the remains. Also present were the Mayor of El Campello, Juan José Berenguer, the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, and various civil and academic authorities, along with Altamira's family members.
Berenguer announced the start of the "Altamira Year," with a series of events and recognitions to honor his legacy. "This act should not be just a farewell, but a commitment to education, justice, and peace," he stated.
Altamira's family expressed their gratitude toward the institutions and researchers who have kept his memory alive. They highlighted his "majestic beard, a symbol of wisdom," and recalled his resilience in the face of adversity.
Toni Pérez concluded with a message of inspiration: "With will, generosity, and dedication, everything is possible. Let us witness his contribution to the world and perpetuate his legacy with pride and responsibility."
