This Is the Prosecutor Who Wants to Grant Amnesty to Puigdemont

The name of María Ángeles Sánchez Conde has been resonating for months

The prosecutor who insists on granting amnesty to Carles Puigdemont is the same one who has defended Pedro Sánchez's Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz, who is under investigation. This is María Ángeles Sánchez Conde, who emphasized that the accusation against the separatist regarding enrichment is unfounded.

Sánchez Conde is García Ortiz's second-in-command, who is under investigation for the alleged crime of revealing secrets. This fact helps to better understand her determination to collaborate with Sánchez's partners. Ángeles Sánchez Conde has desperately wanted to defend García Ortiz.

The prosecutor defending Puigdemont joined the Public Prosecutor's Office in 1982. That same year, she received her first assignment in Cádiz. Two years later, in 1984, she moved to the Catalan capital.

After being in the city of Barcelona, the Attorney General's second-in-command was appointed Prosecutor in León in 1991. Years earlier, in 1988, she was appointed Prosecutor in Bilbao and in 1990, Prosecutor of the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid.

In 1997, she was appointed Prosecutor before the Constitutional Court, and in 2006, she held the position of Deputy Prosecutor of the same Prosecutor's Office. In 2009, she was promoted to Chamber Prosecutor and was appointed Chief Prosecutor of said Prosecutor's Office.

In March 2021, she assumed the position of Chamber Prosecutor assigned to the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court Prosecutor's Office. A year later, in 2022, Sánchez Conde ended up taking office as Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court.

In Defense of a Fugitive from Justice

The Public Prosecutor's Office argues that, since there is no direct financial benefit for the defendants, it is not appropriate to maintain the accusation of embezzlement. Additionally, the State Attorney's Office and the defense lawyers of the separatists have aligned with this interpretation, also requesting that they be granted amnesty.

During the session, the Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, María Ángeles Sánchez Conde, emphasized that the accusation of enrichment is unfounded, as:

No one has claimed that the acts were aimed at obtaining a financial benefit.

She also refuted one of the main arguments for maintaining the accusation of embezzlement: the use of European funds. According to the prosecutor, "no European Union resources have been used, nor has there been any reduction in the community budget." In this regard, she highlighted that the funds used belonged exclusively to the Generalitat, which, in her view, justifies the application of amnesty.

The final resolution of the Supreme Court on this issue will be key in the process of reviewing the legal situation of Puigdemont and his former councilors. Meanwhile, the decision of the Prosecutor's Office reinforces Pedro Sánchez's Government's stance in its strategy of reconciliation with Catalan independence.
