Sánchez's Prosecutor Demands Amnesty for Puigdemont

Amid the concessions to the Catalan separatists, the Prosecutor's Office defends the amnesty for the fugitive

The Public Prosecutor's Office requested this Monday that the Supreme Court apply amnesty to the former president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont. This, considering that there was no personal enrichment nor were European funds used in the acts he is charged with. This stance, in contrast to that of Judge Pablo Llarena, was presented in a public hearing to review the appeals filed by Puigdemont and former councilors Toni Comín and Lluís Puig.

The Public Ministry argues that, since there is no direct financial benefit for the defendants, it is not appropriate to maintain the charge of embezzlement. Additionally, the State Attorney's Office and the defense lawyers of the separatists have aligned with this interpretation, also requesting that they be granted amnesty.

During the session, the Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, María Ángeles Sánchez Conde, emphasized that the accusation of enrichment is unfounded, as:

No one has claimed that the acts were aimed at obtaining a financial benefit.

She also refuted one of the main arguments for maintaining the charge of embezzlement: the use of European funds. According to the prosecutor, "no resources from the European Union have been used, nor has there been any reduction in the community budget." In this regard, she highlighted that the funds used belonged exclusively to the Generalitat, which, in her opinion, justifies the application of amnesty.

The final resolution of the Supreme Court on this issue will be key in the process of reviewing the legal situation of Puigdemont and his former councilors. Meanwhile, the decision of the Public Prosecutor's Office reinforces the stance of Pedro Sánchez's government in its strategy of reconciliation with Catalan independence.
