Mercadona boosts its digital transformation with a 250 million investment
The IT department of the company, Mercadona IT, leads this transformation
Mercadona strengthens its commitment to technological innovation with a Digital Excellence Plan, endowed with 250 million euros (approximately 275 million dollars) for the 2025-2028 period. Its goal is to modernize the company's internal processes, optimizing digitalization in offices, logistics blocks, and physical stores.
The company's IT department, Mercadona IT, leads this transformation. Currently, it is working on improving 300 applications and technological processes, implementing new architectures and advanced tools. Patricia Tobía, general director of Mercadona IT, highlights that they seek to improve efficiency and agility, responding to the needs of the company and its customers.
To carry out this strategy, Mercadona's technological workforce has grown to 1,200 professionals, specialized in software development, cybersecurity, data management, IT infrastructure, UX/UI design, and cloud, among other areas. This team works in coordination with different business areas to design digital solutions that drive efficiency and innovation.
The application of new technologies has allowed for faster decision-making, improved product traceability, and ensured food safety. Additionally, it has optimized logistics costs and enhanced the shopping experience in stores by implementing more efficient lighting systems that save up to 40% in energy consumption. IT solutions have also been developed for the 'Ready to Eat' section and other new services.
Enhancing technological talent
One of the pillars of Mercadona IT is to offer its professionals the opportunity to manage projects from start to finish, seeing the real impact of their work in the company's day-to-day operations. The value proposition is based on three axes: working on high-impact technological projects, developing a solid professional career, and being part of a highly qualified team.
Additionally, employees receive continuous training and collaborate with global technological leaders, allowing Mercadona to continue evolving and improving its digital infrastructure.
