The Incomprehensible Rejection by the Government Delegate to Install Surveillance in Madrid
Francisco Martín leaves the municipality of Collado Villalba without video surveillance cameras
Francisco Martín, Government Delegate in Madrid, has rejected the request submitted by the Collado Villalba City Council. In its petition, the People's Party sought to install fourteen surveillance cameras at different points in the municipality. This request was made on November 28 of last year.
It aimed to increase security in areas with a large influx of people during events such as patron saint festivals, trade fairs, and markets.
On December 19, 2024, the Surveillance Guarantees Commission of the Community of Madrid issued a negative report. It indicated that the request did not have adequate justification.

It was also highlighted that the City Council should present official crime data and statistics provided by the Madrid Civil Guard Command to support the petition.
In response to this, the Collado Villalba City Council has expressed its astonishment. Especially considering that Collado Villalba ranks as the fourth municipality with the highest crime rate in the Community of Madrid.
The mayor has contacted the Government Delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martín Aguirre, to address the decision. According to several media outlets, the delegate reportedly described the request as a "non-urgent" matter and labeled the mayor as "irresponsible."

The Government Delegation has indicated that "nothing prevents" Collado Villalba from resubmitting the request in the future. As long as it is "sufficiently justified" and the requirements established in the Organic Law regulating these systems are met.
The truth is that these surveillance cameras are key.
Surveillance is an important tool to aid city security. It facilitates police work in monitoring and detecting criminal acts and their investigation.
Given its preventive effect, it also contributes to the reduction of incidents in the areas where it is implemented. It makes residents feel safer, thus improving community coexistence.
Also, as a deterrent element for those who want to commit criminal acts, it is a necessary tool.
