Neither Lidl nor Mercadona: These Are the Worst Mussels in the Supermarket in Spain According to the OCU

The OCU Points to a Supermarket's Private Label Canned Mussels as the Least Recommended

Canned mussels hold a privileged place in Spanish kitchens. Whether improvising a snack, setting up a Sunday vermouth, or adding a touch to a salad, this product is synonymous with flavor. They keep well, prepare quickly, and, in theory, should offer good quality.

The reality, however, is different: not all pickled mussels from the supermarket meet expectations. That's why the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has aimed to bring order to the shelf with a detailed analysis of the most common options. Their goal is clear: to help the consumer choose wisely and avoid disappointments.

These Are the Worst Mussels in the Supermarket, According to the OCU

In this OCU comparison, besides highlighting the mussels with the best quality-price ratio, there is also one that doesn't come out well. Here's where the surprise comes, because it's neither Lidl nor Mercadona.

One of the most criticized brands by the OCU has been Auchan, the well-known private label of Alcampo. At first glance, it may seem like a promising option, but experts don't agree. According to the analysis, these mussels have a broken texture that leaves much to be desired.

The pickling doesn't help either: the vinegar flavor is too aggressive and, to make matters worse, it's not a quality vinegar. This product, far from standing out for its flavor, does so for its high price, which also finds no justification in the final quality.

But not all is bad news for the consumer who trusts private labels. The OCU has also highlighted options that offer good quality without breaking the bank. One of them is Sol de Plata, from Aldi, which has surprised with its balanced pickling and a flavor that, without needing giant mussels, convinces.

Meanwhile, Lidl also sneaks into the recommendations thanks to its Nixe product. With a juicy texture, just the right amount of spiciness, and a careful presentation, it achieves a good rating. Carrefour also receives a positive mention, with tasty mussels at an affordable price.

What Should a Good Pickled Mussel Have?

Choosing a good canned mussel may seem like a simple task, but there are small details that make the difference. The size should be uniform, the texture firm, and the pickling balanced.

Neither the vinegar should be the only noticeable flavor nor should the spices mask the taste of the seafood. The packaging also says a lot. A clear label with the product's origin and its ingredients is a good starting point to know what we're buying.
