Goodbye Macy's: The company has already announced massive closures in the United States

Macy's Confirms Several Closures in the United States as Part of a New Commercial Transformation Process

The firm Macy's has been one of the most iconic retail chains in the United States for decades. Its iconic stores have been present in hundreds of shopping centers across the country. Now that presence will be significantly reduced.

The company has announced the closure of 66 stores before the end of 2026, as part of a major restructuring strategy. The plan, called "Bold New Chapter," seeks to adapt to new consumer habits, marked by the rise of online shopping. Macy's first closures began last year and affected thousands of workers and local communities.

Closed Stores and Reasons for the Retreat

Among the confirmed locations are San Leandro, California, and Arlington, Virginia, where preparations have already begun to cease operations. In New York, five iconic Macy's establishments will be affected, including those at Fordham Place, Queens Place, and Sunrise Mall. The Brooklyn store, which had been in operation for 30 years, was also recently closed.

The first stage of closures began in early 2024, with an initial estimate of 50 stores. However, the figure was revised several times to reach the current total of 66 planned closures. Macy's has explained that the decision is based on the low performance of some stores and the real estate value of the properties.

The stores affected are mainly located in traditional shopping centers, many of which have lost appeal in recent years. These spaces have been displaced by e-commerce and more flexible business models. All the locations that will close will conduct liquidation sales to deplete their remaining inventory.

Renewal Plan and New Openings

Despite this wave of closures, Macy's is not withdrawing from the retail business. The company plans to open 30 smaller-format stores, designed for more efficient locations closer to consumers. Additionally, it is in the process of opening 15 new Bloomingdale's and 30 Bluemercury stores, specializing in beauty products, according to The Sun.

As part of the same plan, about 350 existing stores will be remodeled. These renovations include a new product layout, more modern spaces, and a better connection with the online sales platform. The budget for this transformation ranges between 600 and 700 million euros.

Tony Spring, CEO of Macy's, has stated that the goal is to offer a more current and attractive shopping experience. The company wants to focus its resources on places where the customer actually shops. With this strategy, Macy's hopes to regain ground in an increasingly changing and digital market.
