The 4 Beloved Pizza Chains That Are Shutting Down in the United States

Unprecedented Crisis in the Pizza Sector in the United States

The crisis spares not even the most beloved flavors. During April 2025, several iconic pizza chains in the United States confirmed store closures or bankruptcy processes.

The news shakes both their workers and thousands of customers. They saw these places as more than just a simple fast food option.

The 4 Pizza Chains in the United States That Are Closing

One of those affected is Bertucci's, the historic chain famous for its brick oven pizzas and family-friendly atmosphere on the East Coast. On April 24, the company filed for bankruptcy for the third time in less than ten years.

Currently, it keeps 16 locations open, mainly in Massachusetts and Virginia. However, in recent weeks it has closed five restaurants, including its last stronghold in Rhode Island. Bertucci's is now seeking to reorganize its finances to try to keep its tradition alive.

Another brand saying goodbye is Zeppe's Tavern, a franchise that since 1986 mixed generous pizzas with rock and roll-inspired decor. The company, which operates 13 branches in Ohio and one in Florida, filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the bankruptcy law earlier this month. The accumulated debts, ranging between 500,000 and one million dollars, complicate its future. Even so, the owners assure that they are working to save as many locations as possible.

Meanwhile, MOD Pizza, a favorite in the fast-service segment, is also going through tough times. Although the announcement was made in 2024, the effects are visible this year. The chain closed 27 of its establishments as part of a deep restructuring. Its concept of personalized pizzas had won over many, but high costs and market pressure ended up affecting its business model.

Finally, in Texas, NB's Wicked Bah Pizza confirmed that it will close its location in New Braunfels before the end of April. This small but popular restaurant, specializing in South Shore-style pizzas, will close its doors due to a change in plans by its owners. They explained that the decision is due to a new business opportunity that, they assure, will remain linked to the world of pizza.

These closures reflect a difficult time for the industry, which faces the impact of inflation, rising operating costs, and changing consumer habits. Eating pizza remains one of the favorite activities of American families. However, the chains must adapt to an increasingly demanding and competitive market.

For fans, the farewells not only mean finding a new dinner option. They also represent the closure of spaces that, for many, were the scene of celebrations, family gatherings, and unforgettable memories.

The pizza oven remains hot in the United States, but clearly not everyone can withstand the heat.
