Big blow for Uber Eats: DoorDash steps up in the United States
The company has announced a new development that will undoubtedly revolutionize the industry and make the competition become active
DoorDash, the home delivery giant, has taken a bold step in the race to revolutionize food delivery. The company has just announced a novelty that won't please its competition. In fact, it forces them to step up and evolve.
Specifically, DoorDash has launched a new drone delivery service in Charlotte, North Carolina. This innovative option, which promises to deliver fresh food directly to users' doors in a matter of minutes, is already available in some areas of the city. Specifically within a four-mile (6.44 km) radius around the Arboretum Shopping Center.
The service includes popular restaurants as first options such as Panera Bread, Curry Junction, Matcha Cafe Maiko, and Joa Korean Food. Eligible users will see a Drone icon on the main screen of the DoorDash app. By selecting it, they can browse the available restaurants and place the order as usual.

What can be ordered via drone
Only small and lightweight items can be delivered this way, and users will be able to track the drone's journey in real-time. Upon reaching the address, the drone doesn't land but hovers in the air while lowering the order via a cable. This ensures a safe and contactless delivery.
This aerial delivery system is operated by Wing, a company specializing in drones that collaborates with DoorDash to streamline deliveries. According to Wing, the drones are designed to operate even in mild weather conditions, such as drizzles or moderate winds, and a single pilot can oversee multiple drones at once.

Not only food can be sent
"Whether it's your favorite sandwich, a snack, or a matcha latte, there's something special about seeing your order arrive flying in minutes," said Harrison Shih, head of product at DoorDash Labs. As a launch offer, Panera Bread is offering mac & cheese bowls for just one dollar if ordered via drone for a limited time. Additionally, products from DashMart, such as snacks, drinks, and medications, are also available in this mode.
As well as promotional products from local brands like Cheerwine, Life Raft Treats, and Appalachia Cookie Co. This rollout in Charlotte follows successful trials in Virginia, Texas, and previously in Australia in 2022. DoorDash plans to expand the service to more restaurants and neighborhoods in the coming months, marking a turning point in delivery logistics.
