Valencia will remember the floods with the "Plaza de las víctimas de la DANA"

The Culture Commission proposes dedicating the esplanade of Avenida d'Aragó to the victims

The Culture Commission of the València City Council will debate a proposal to rename the esplanade of the avenida d'Aragó as "Plaza de las víctimas de la DANA del 29 de octubre de 2024." This initiative arises from the plenary agreement reached last December 20 and is part of the work plan of the Non-Permanent Commission for the Recovery of areas affected by the DANA.

The Councilor for Cultural Action, Heritage, and Cultural Resources, José Luis Moreno, explained that the name change will apply exclusively to the landscaped median where the Monument to the victims of the floods is located, next to the plaza de Saragossa. According to Moreno, this modification won't affect residents or local businesses, as it doesn't include sidewalks or residential addresses.

The initiative seeks to pay tribute to the victims of the devastating DANA that took place on October 29, 2024, one of the most severe in the region's recent history. The selected esplanade already houses the Monument to the victims of the floods, inaugurated in 1982 in memory of those who died in the 1957 tragedy and other previous floods. This monument, designed by sculptor Ramón de Soto Arándiga, is a structure of artificial stone reaching 52 feet in height in two almost vertical rectilinear bodies.

Councilor Moreno highlighted that this proposal reinforces the City Council's commitment to historical memory and the recovery of areas affected by natural disasters. "It's a recognition of the victims and a way to keep alive the memory of events that have marked our history," he noted.

The new name of the esplanade is part of an effort to combine the physical recovery of spaces damaged by the DANA with a tribute to the affected people. Thus, the city of València reaffirms its commitment to memory and citizen solidarity.
