Sánchez's surprising measure to take against the owners of social media platforms
Pedro Sánchez has announced in Davos that he is going to take action against major social media owners like Elon Musk
Pedro Sánchez has once again placed himself at the center of controversy. The President of Government took advantage of his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos to lash out against the owners of major social media networks.
Sánchez began by disparagingly describing them as "technomultimillionaires" who only seek to dominate the economy. During his speech, the President went so far as to claim that they wield powerful influence over global politics.
Sánchez surprisingly highlights that these leaders, in his view, represent a direct threat to democracy. He asserts that they are not adhering to ethical standards nor taking responsibility for their actions.
During his address at this prestigious international forum, Sánchez proposed concrete measures against these tech giants. Among the measures he wants to develop is holding them accountable if they don't comply with regulations. He believes that penalties should be imposed if the networks they lead don't meet the requirements he himself deems appropriate.
Another measure the President wants to implement is ending anonymity on social platforms, in order to ensure greater transparency and accountability. The President acknowledged that the battle will not be easy due to the immense economic and technological power these entrepreneurs possess. "I know we can win the battle because we are right and we are more," he says, as if he were speaking about totalitarian leaders.
In addition to this combative message against what he defined as the "technocaste," Sánchez referred to the risk that these billionaires could be eroding democracy. He asserts that the alleged collusion that exists between many of these entrepreneurs and political leaders is a serious problem.
The President used this to attack Donald Trump. He cited the example of the support the President of the United States receives from major tech companies like the one led by Elon Musk.
However, his intervention didn't have much impact. As seen in a video of the room circulated on social media, more than half of the seats were empty. It can be observed how the first eight or nine rows were occupied, while the rest of the auditorium remained empty.
Sánchez's speech has caused debate among the public. National and international media have echoed the surprising measures Sánchez wants to take against the main leaders of social networks.
