Mercadona restructures its management with a reduction of its executive committee
The company goes from 16 to only 6 members in its highest governing body
Mercadona has started 2025 with a deep internal restructuring, further concentrating its top management. One of the most significant changes is the unification of its purchasing department under the direction of Paco Espert, a company veteran, who now also takes on the areas of sea, fruit, vegetable, bakery, and "Ready to Eat." Until now, this macro area was led by Rafa Berrocal, who is leaving the company after 18 years on the management committee.
With this move, the purchasing area, which five years ago was divided among seven executives, is now managed by a single person, consolidating Mercadona's commitment to a more compact structure.
A smaller management committee
The company chaired by Juan Roig continues to slim down its executive team, which has gone from 16 members in 2021 to just 6 in 2025. Thus, the current management committee is composed of:
José Jordá: General director of stores, human resources, and perishable prescriptions.
David Cid: General director of logistics.
Pilar Sanz: General director of construction and expansion.
Patricia Tobía: General director of IT.
Héctor Hernández: General financial director, external relations, and legacy.
Paco Espert: General director of the macro purchasing and prescription department.
This way, the executive body is reduced to six people, of whom two are women.
More changes in the internal structure
Another important adjustment at the start of this year has been the relocation of the External Relations area, which is now integrated into the Financial, External Relations, and Legacy Department, under the direction of Héctor Hernández. Until now, this department was led by Elena Tejedor.
Meanwhile, although none of Juan Roig's daughters are part of the management committee, they do hold key positions on the board of directors:
Juana Roig Herrero: Director of Mercadona Online.
Hortensia Roig Herrero: General director of Edem.
Amparo Roig Herrero: Head of ERRE architecture.
Carolina Roig Herrero: Secretary of Mercadona's board.
Additionally, Hortensia Herrero Chacón maintains her role as vice president of the company, and on the board of directors remain Fernando Roig Alfonso (Grupo Pamesa) and Rafael Gómez Gómez.
With this restructuring, Mercadona strengthens its more agile and centralized management model, consolidating the leadership of its reduced committee at a key moment for the company's evolution.
