Mazón Announces Freedom of Language Choice for 570,000 Families

The president emphasized that this policy aims to promote coexistence and balance between the two co-official languages.

The President of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, has announced that 570,000 families will have the opportunity to choose the primary language in their children's education thanks to the first online consultation, which will take place between February 25 and March 4. This measure is aimed at students in the second cycle of Preschool, Primary, and the first three years of Secondary Education.

Accompanied by the Minister of Education, Culture, Universities, and Employment, José Antonio Rovira, Mazón presented the informational campaign about this initiative, which reflects the Consell's commitment to educational freedom and the active participation of families in their children's education. "It is about returning the decision-making power to families, ensuring that students are proficient in both Valencian and Spanish by the end of their studies," Mazón stated.

The President emphasized that this policy seeks to promote coexistence and balance between the two co-official languages, moving away from the "linguistic imposition" of previous governments. He also called for massive participation from families, highlighting that a greater reply will allow for better adjustment of the educational offer to the real demands of society.

The system will ensure a linguistic balance, with a maximum difference of 20% between the chosen primary language and the subjects taught in the other language. In Spanish-speaking areas, the Valencian subject will be maintained, although exemption from its evaluation can be requested. Students will be able to take their exams in either of the two official languages.

This measure is part of a series of educational reforms promoted by the Consell, which include the implementation of the single school district, free education from 0 to 3 years old, and the Law of Educational Freedom. Mazón highlighted that "these changes aim for a more inclusive education, respectful of linguistic diversity and focused on the well-being of students."

The information campaign will be developed under the slogan "Dos llengües, una Comunitat," highlighting the importance of coexistence and respect between Valencian and Spanish. Families will be able to participate in the consultation through the website consulta.gva.es, where guides and tutorials will be available to facilitate the voting process.
