The mayor of Algemesí demands Sanchez expedite aid after the DANA
The mayor has regretted that many families could become heavily indebted if the aid doesn't arrive in full and quickly.
The mayor of Algemesí, José Javier Sanchis, has called on the central government to expedite the arrival of financial aid not only to affected families but also to the municipalities, so they can advance in the reconstruction of municipal infrastructure.
"We have many urgent situations that can't wait," Sanchis warned, highlighting the enormous cost of the emergency: "We understand that not everything can be justified immediately, but we need a lifeline. Suppliers see that they won't get paid and stop working (...). There are cleaning service bills that exceed 100,000 euros. We need help," he stated.
Indebted residents and a crisis scenario
In an interview on Les Notícies del Matí de À Punt, the mayor lamented that many families could become severely indebted if the aid doesn't arrive in full and quickly. "The scenario in Algemesí has changed, but behind the picture, the dramas continue. Many families are buying new vehicles while still paying installments on the previous one, which they lost in the DANA," he explained.
Sanchis detailed the impact of the overflow of the Magro River, which has left:
12,000 claims to the Consortium for affected vehicles.
6,000 damaged homes.
900 claims in industrial warehouses.
1,200 affected businesses.
Municipal infrastructure severely damaged
The damage affects not only private properties but also public roads, where structural damage is significant:
Four underpasses have been rendered unusable.
The sewer network needs repairs exceeding 25 million euros.
The mayor has insisted on the urgency of a quick reply from the government to prevent the reconstruction from stalling, further worsening the situation of the locality and the quality of life of its inhabitants.
