Carrasco drives urban renaturalization with more green areas, shade, and trees
Castellón strengthens its commitment to sustainability and urban well-being
Castellón strengthens its commitment to sustainability and urban well-being through an ambitious rewilding strategy. The mayor of Castellón, Begoña Carrasco, has chaired a technical meeting to analyze the City Council's participation in a new call for European FEDER funds, aimed at improving green infrastructure and biodiversity in urban environments. Castellón aims to obtain up to 3.5 million euros to carry out various initiatives.
Nature-based strategies
Carrasco highlighted that this call is aimed at provincial capitals and municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants, and emphasized that the projects aim to expand nature-based solutions, improving the quality of life and comfort of citizens. Among the most notable proposals are:
Network of climate oases: spaces that combat heat islands with vegetation and shaded areas.
Greening of squares and public spaces: incorporating trees, plants, and green roofs to beautify and naturalize the urban environment.
Naturalization of urban ponds and fountains: using plants to improve water quality and promote biodiversity.
Rewilding of schoolyards: creating shaded areas to enhance children's recess and generate new habitats.
A commitment to electoral promises
The mayor reaffirmed that this initiative fulfills the promises made before taking office: to make Castellón a greener, more sustainable, and attractive city for its inhabitants.
The City Council has until February 27, 2025, to submit applications. The projects must be executed between September 2025 and September 2028. These European funds co-finance up to 60% of the investment, which will allow Castellón to continue developing its vision of a sustainable city committed to the environment.
The initiative adds to other projects such as the Integrated Action Plans of Local Entities (EDIL), which aim to obtain up to 20 million euros of FEDER funding.
