Barcelona City Council bids farewell to Twitter, as left-wing profiles did
Jaume Collboni will sign an executive order by which on January 31st the city council will close the social media accounts
Jaume Collboni assures that the Barcelona City Council will leave the social network X, formerly known as Twitter. He announced this in a post published on the city's official account.
The mayor himself will sign an executive order by which the city council will close all the operational accounts it has on this social network. The exception will be the general account—@bcn.ajuntament—which will be used solely to provide emergency information, weather alerts, and traffic disruptions.
With this new move, the Barcelona City Council becomes the first major European city to adopt this measure. This decision has already been made by other European capitals, institutions and media outlets.
They have stated that citizens have the right to "receive truthful and honest information," which, according to them, is not available on the social network. They also point out: "Barcelona wants to continue being a world leader in technological humanism and digital democracy. This desire has become incompatible with remaining on X today."
Another reason is their accusation that Twitter is "immersed in a spiral of fake news and intolerance that directly threatens democracy."
Meanwhile, the City Council is keeping its accounts open on Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, and YouTube.
What is the New Social Network That All the Left-wing Spokespersons are Moving to?
Last week was marked by several statements from prominent figures in politics, journalism, or simply on social networks, in which they claimed to leave the digital platform X. All of them harshly criticized Elon Musk's social network following Donald Trump's victory and the changes in the former Twitter.
One of the first controversies was led by newspaper La Vanguardia. They announced its departure from Musk's social network because, according to them, it is a platform of disinformation. However, a few hours later, the same outlet spread the helicopter hoax.
Amid the left-wing scandal, journalists and politicians announced their departure from the network. Among them were Àngels Barceló, Juan Lobato, Jorge Javier Vázquez, Antón Losada, among others. Shortly after, we learned that all these figures are leaving X for a social network called Bluesky.
What is Bluesky and Who is Behind It?
Bluesky is the supposedly decentralized social network that aims to revolutionize the landscape and position itself as an alternative to X. The platform, which has been a refuge for the left, continues to attract users since its public release in February 2024.
It was originally conceived as a project within Twitter in 2019. The platform seeks to offer an experience free from the common problems in large centralized social networks. With its innovative AT Protocol, Bluesky allows users to customize their experience and maintain control over their data and posts.
