Alicante Dedicates a Walkway in Gran Vía Sur to the National Police
The official inauguration of the promenade will be held soon in a solemn ceremony organized by the Alicante City Council.
Alicante will name the Paseo de la Policía Nacional in Gran Vía Sur, in compliance with an institutional declaration approved in the plenary session on January 30, 2024, on the occasion of the bicentennial celebration of the creation of the Policía Nacional. This recognition adds to the already existing monument to the Santos Ángeles Custodios, inaugurated in 2022 in the Puerta del Mar square, a work by sculptor Juan José Quirós Illán.
The plenary agreement was approved with the votes in favor of Vox, as the proposer, and the Partido Popular, while the rest of the municipal corporation formations (PSOE, Compromís, and EU Podem) abstained. The declaration highlights the history of the Policía Nacional in Alicante, which dates back to the 19th century, with the first police station established in the city on July 14, 1844.
The oldest state body of the State Security Forces and Corps was created on January 13, 1824, by initiative of King Fernando VII. During these two centuries, the Policía Nacional has served the citizens and Spain with a spirit of public service, playing an essential role in citizen security, which justifies this tribute.
The monument inaugurated in 2022 symbolizes a Santo Ángel Custodio, the patron of the Corps, protecting a girl dressed in a Bellea costume. The sculpture, made of bronze, is located in an emblematic place in the city, the Puerta del Mar square. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Policía Nacional Symphonic Band, Mayor Luis Barçala, heads of the Policía Nacional, and representatives of the Hogueras festivities.
The municipal Statistics department, led by councilor Lidia López, is responsible for preparing the identification plaques for the new Paseo de la Policía Nacional in Gran Vía Sur. The official inauguration of the paseo will be held soon in a solemn ceremony organized by the Alicante City Council, with the expected participation of local authorities, members of the Corps, and the general public.
