Royal Family Makes a Firm Decision Regarding Felipe and Letizia That Will Change Many Things
The Decrease in Official Acts by the Kings of Spain Moves Them Away from Prominence on the International Scene
For some time now, State visits seem to have taken a back seat in the agenda of Felipe VI and Letizia. While other European monarchies continue with intense diplomatic activity, the Spanish Royal House has made a firm decision: to reduce the participation of the kings in this type of events. A change that could affect their visibility and weight on the international stage.
What is behind this situation? While other royal houses continue to lead diplomatic meetings, in Spain the absence of these draws attention. Is it a deliberate strategy or a consequence of governmental decisions?

Royal House Makes a Firm Decision with Felipe and Letizia
Historically, the agenda of the kings included at least two State visits annually, either hosting leaders in Spanish territory or representing the country abroad. However, since April 2023 there has been no official visit where Felipe VI and Letizia acted as hosts. The last one was the visit of the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and since then no new meetings have been announced.
In contrast, other European monarchies have kept an intense diplomatic activity. Frederik and Mary of Denmark will begin a State visit to France this week, where they will be received by President Emmanuel Macron. Similarly, Ingrid Alexandra of Norway and Amalia of the Netherlands have been included in State trips alongside leaders from Iceland and Oman.

Even the kings of Belgium, Philippe and Mathilde, have set an example with their agenda, embarking on a trip to Vietnam after receiving the president of Singapore on an official visit. In the United Kingdom, despite King Charles III's health issues, the agenda of international visits remains active, although with some modifications.
The situation in Spain, however, is different. Although the organization of these visits depends on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and not on the Royal House. The truth is that the absence of these diplomatic meetings has significantly reduced the presence of Felipe VI and Letizia on the international stage.
The Consequences of Felipe and Letizia's Lack of International Activity
The reasons for this decrease in official acts are not entirely clear. Some experts point out that the Spanish Government has prioritized other matters in foreign diplomacy, relegating State visits to a second plane. Meanwhile, others suggest that it could be a strategy by the Royal House to keep a lower profile in a politically turbulent time.
The truth is that this decision could have consequences. The lack of visibility on the diplomatic scene could affect the image of the Spanish monarchy compared to other royal houses. The perception that the kings are less active in their institutional role could generate criticism and affect their prestige.

For now, the little that is known about future international commitments of Felipe VI and Letizia points to a possible visit to China in November. Additionally, according to information from the king himself, a trip to Egypt is being finalized, although without confirmed dates for the first half of 2025.
The decrease in official acts of Felipe VI and Letizia raises several questions. Is it a temporary strategy or a trend that will consolidate over time? Could it affect the image of the Spanish monarchy compared to other European royal houses?
For now, the answer remains in the air. While other monarchies strengthen their role in international diplomacy, in Spain the agenda of Felipe and Letizia remains awaiting new announcements. The decision to reduce these acts could change many things, but only time will tell what their true consequences will be.
