Neither Rain nor Snow: 6 Communities on Alert for What's Coming in the Next Few Hours

A cold front is currently crossing the Iberian Peninsula, and AEMET has issued warnings in six autonomous communities.

A new episode of instability looms over Spain. Although the rains have been prominent in recent days in some regions of the country, the situation is changing. Now, wind and extreme waves especially threaten coastal areas.

In the coming hours, six autonomous communities will be on alert. Not only for intense wind gusts but also for a very rough sea. This phenomenon is due to the passage of a cold front, which will bring changes in the atmosphere and a drop in temperatures.

The Wind Will Arrive With Force in the Eastern Peninsula

Catalonia and the Valencian Community will be in the spotlight for strong wind gusts. Gusts between 43 and 50 mph (70 and 80 km/h) are expected in Tarragona and Castellón. The wind will blow from the northwest with force, which could cause incidents.

Additionally, in eastern Catalonia, storms with hail are not ruled out. The day will begin with fog in the eastern pre-coastal area, complicating visibility in some areas. In the Pyrenees of Lleida, snow will continue to accumulate, especially in Arán.

Dangerous Waves in the Cantabrian and Galicia

The northern coasts will also be affected. Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia and the Basque Country are on alert for coastal phenomena. In A Coruña and Lugo, the southwest wind will reach 31-38 mph (50-61 km/h), with a combined sea that could generate waves up to 16 ft. (5 meters).

In Pontevedra, the situation will be no different. In Bizkaia, the west wind will reach gusts up to 46 mph (74 km/h) during the early morning of February 25. The sea will remain very rough, posing a risk for navigation and maritime activities.

The day will be dominated by the arrival of a cold front. Most of the territory will see overcast skies and light rain, more intense in mountainous areas of the north. The rain will be persistent in A Coruña, where more than 3.15 in. (80 l/m²) could accumulate in less than 12 hours.

In the northern half, snow will appear at altitudes above 4921 ft. (1500 meters). As the hours pass, the snow level will drop to 2953-3937 ft. (900-1200 meters), accumulating more in Arán. In the rest of the country, temperatures will experience a notable drop.

The wind will not only affect the Iberian Peninsula, as in the Canary Islands strong wind intervals are also expected in some areas, especially at the beginning of the day. Moderate trade winds will prevail, although they could intensify at certain times. Additionally, a slight entry of haze from the southeast could reduce visibility in some areas.

Unlike the rest of the country, the Canary archipelago will enjoy clear skies. Temperatures will remain stable or with slight increases, both in maximums and minimums.

Meanwhile, in the Balearic Islands, the cold front will arrive late in the day. An increase in cloudiness and the possible arrival of light rain is expected. Additionally, the wind will intensify as the hours pass, which could lead to an increase in waves in the archipelago.
