Drastic change at Movistar: with this decision, it gives Orange and Vodafone the reason
Movistar takes an important step, following the path previously taken by its rivals.
Movistar has made a decision that marks a significant change in its technological strategy. The operator has decided to dispense with Huawei for the development of its 5G network. It is a measure that vindicates its competitors, Orange and Vodafone, who had already made a similar decision earlier.
This step by the Spanish company could have a significant impact on the telecommunications sector, especially regarding the use of technology from the Asian company.
Movistar Joins Ericsson and Nokia
Until now, Movistar had relied on Huawei to manage part of its 5G infrastructure. However, following in the footsteps of Vodafone and Orange, the Spanish operator has decided to change providers. The decision is that, from now on, its 5G network will be composed of two major providers: Ericsson and Nokia.
This choice is not a total surprise. In the past, it had already announced that Ericsson would handle a significant part of its 5G network. What remained to be decided was who would take over the part still managed by Huawei.
Finally, Movistar has opted for Nokia to fill that gap, reports Adsl Zone.
Vodafone and Orange Had Already Taken the Lead
The curious thing about this situation is that Movistar has taken longer than its competitors to make this decision. Vodafone and Orange had already dispensed with Huawei before.
Nevertheless, Huawei is still present in these operators' networks in part of their infrastructure. For example, Vodafone uses Huawei technology in 70% of its radio network, while in Orange this figure reaches 54%. However, both operators have made it clear that their intention is to reduce Huawei's presence in the coming years.
With Movistar's decision, the three major operators in Spain are moving away from Huawei concerning the core of their 5G networks. This means that, in the future, none of the three main operators will rely on Huawei's technology in their central systems.
The Future of 5G in Spain
Now that Movistar has aligned with Vodafone and Orange, the competition among the three operators to offer the best 5G network will continue. But with a key difference: none of the three will depend on the Asian company. This could accelerate the transition to a more diverse 5G ecosystem, with providers like Ericsson and Nokia taking a leading role.
The question now is how this decision will affect users in the short and medium term. The competition in the telecommunications sector is fierce, and the technological transition to 5G could imply significant improvements in quality. However, it is also possible that operators will face challenges in terms of cost and time to complete this technological restructuring.
