The change in Queen Letizia that will surprise the Borbón family: a lot of effort

Felipe VI's wife has worked hard to make a significant change for the monarchy and its image

Since she married the current monarch in 2004, Queen Letizia has been under constant scrutiny from public opinion and the media. Her entry into the Borbón family marked a turning point, not only because of her non-royal background, but also because of the strong character with which she faced her role. However, it has only been recently that a deep change in her attitude and public behavior has been noticed, something that has not gone unnoticed.

According to experts, this shift in her image is not accidental. She has worked consciously to transform herself into a more approachable, natural, and spontaneous queen. This new, warmer, and more communicative profile surprises citizens and, in all likelihood, also some members of the clan itself.

Queen Letizia leaves rigidity behind and appears more approachable, to the surprise of the Borbón family

When Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano left her career as a journalist to become Princess of Asturias, the change was drastic. She gave up her professional independence to embrace the institutional discipline of the Spanish monarchy.

Since then, and during the first years of Felipe VI's reign, her attitude was exemplarily restrained. She was always protocol-driven, respectful, professional... but also distant.

In an environment where every gesture is publicly interpreted, Queen Letizia chose to protect herself through formality. This earned her both praise for her sobriety and criticism for her apparent coldness. For years, that image helped her establish herself within the institution, far from the more informal style of other European royals.

However, as analyst Concha Calleja recently detailed in statements collected by Divinity, she is no longer the same. Now, she says: "She smiles more, talks more with people, improvises naturally and, from time to time, even touches. A hug here, a laugh there, a direct look into the eyes of whoever approaches."

This change, though subtle, is very significant. It speaks of a more empathetic, less distant queen, who kneels down to talk to children, who praises without reading speeches, and who shows affection naturally. This is a very different image from years past and, undoubtedly, represents a new stage in her institutional trajectory.

The possible causes of Queen Letizia's transformation

The shift in Queen Letizia's attitude could be explained by multiple reasons. Some see it as part of a well-thought-out institutional strategy, aiming to bring the monarchy even closer to the public. This would explain why King Felipe now also appears more uninhibited, natural, and humorous with the public.

However, others interpret the transformation of Leonor's mother as a sign of personal growth and maturity. The result of years of accumulated experience, a deep understanding of her role, and the fact that she is now more confident in performing her institutional duties.

Whatever the cause, the truth is that this new attitude has improved her image with the public, and also sends a very powerful message within the Borbón family. Letizia has shown that, although she was not born into royalty, she has managed to adapt, learn, and now transform the model from within.

Moreover, this new accessible queen profile helps further differentiate Felipe VI's era from that of his father, former King Juan Carlos I. It is a modern, calm, and professional approach, yet approachable, that fits with the process of institutional renewal that both have promoted since the beginning of the current reign.
