Banco Santander Remains on Alert: Customers Are Warned After What Happened
Banco Santander verifies that criminals try to take advantage of their customers by sending them fraudulent emails.
Banco Santander has issued a warning following a recent scam attempt that has endangered the financial security of many users. The increasingly cunning criminals are using identity theft techniques to deceive customers and thus steal their access credentials to banking systems and other online services.
Recently, the renowned cybersecurity company ESET has detected threats involving the Snake Keylogger. It is a type of malware specifically designed to steal passwords and other credentials. They claim it has affected several users, including clients of the entity.
Banco Santander does everything possible to protect customers
The criminals' modus operandi is quite simple but effective. They impersonate Banco Santander by sending fraudulent emails that appear legitimate. In these emails, users are informed that they have an outstanding invoice or need to review their budget.

The messages include an attachment that appears to be an important document. But in reality, it is a malicious script designed to infect the user's system.
The goal of these attacks is to steal the credentials stored on the victims' devices. When the user executes the attachment, an infection process begins that downloads an infostealer. It is a type of malware that collects passwords and other private information.
It sends the collected information directly to the criminals, allowing them to access bank accounts, online services, and other systems with which users interact.
Banco Santander wouldn't be the only company affected, as they also mention Repsol in El Periódico de la Energía. They explain that once the malicious file is executed, the Snake Keylogger is responsible for extracting the credentials stored on the device and sending them to the strikers.

The fraudulent emails may have a convincing design, similar to Banco Santander's official emails. However, they often include errors that reveal the scam. For example, the sender may be misspelled, or the links may redirect to fake sites, like images instead of a webpage.
Banco Santander's recommendations
In the face of these types of threats, Banco Santander has urged its customers not to let their guard down. It is essential to always verify the authenticity of emails before clicking on any links or downloading files. Additionally, the entity recommends never sharing passwords or personal information via email.
The bank also emphasizes that it will never send communications requesting confidential information or attach suspicious files in its emails. In case of doubt, it is always better to contact the bank directly through its official channels.
