Walmart and Target stand up to Amazon in the USA: There's no turning back

Walmart and Target strengthen their commercial strategy to compete against Amazon in the U.S. market

The major retail chains in the United States are intensifying their commercial battle in the midst of the sale season. The competition to attract the most budget-conscious consumers has become fiercer with the rise of promotional events that directly rival Amazon's well-known Prime Day.

This year, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Kohl's have announced simultaneous promotions that coincide with Amazon's extended celebration. The strategy aims to prevent shoppers from focusing exclusively on Amazon and, in addition, to take advantage of the back-to-school shopping momentum and get ahead of holiday sales.

Walmart and Target strengthen their deals to compete with Amazon

Walmart has replied with its "Walmart Deals" event, which will take place from July 8 to 13, right alongside Amazon's Prime Day. The highlight is that, for the first time, this promotion will be available both in physical stores and online.

In addition, members of the Walmart+ program can access the deals starting the night of July 7, one day before the general public, according to Axios. This initiative aims to establish Walmart as a key player in sales during this crucial season.

Meanwhile, Target returns with "Target Circle Week" from July 6 to 12, focusing especially on school and electronic products. Members of Target Circle 360, the exclusive paid program, enjoy early access starting July 5. The chain also highlighted that they will keep 2024 prices on back-to-school items.

Other competitors gain strength in the race for deals

Best Buy and Kohl's are also intensifying their promotions for this summer. Best Buy is bringing back its famous "Black Friday in July" event from July 7 to 13, which has become one of the most important of the summer. This year, just like Amazon, they extended the duration of the event to make the most of the demand.

Meanwhile, Kohl's announced the extension of its "Summer Cyber Deals," which will now last four days from July 7 to 10, double the length of 2024. The chain offers free shipping on all purchases and will launch new deals daily both in stores and on its online platform. In addition, customers can accumulate $10 in "Kohl's Cash" for every $50 spent during the promotion, an additional incentive to encourage spending.

Amazon, in response, has extended its traditional Prime Day to four days in 2025, from July 8 to 11, marking the longest sale in the history of this event. During this period, Prime members have access to millions of deals in more than 35 categories. In addition, the promotion includes early discounts such as $1 off per gallon of gasoline from July 3 to 6, aiming to capture attention even before the official start.
