Kroger makes a last-minute decision in the United States and knocks out Walmart

A strategic move by Kroger challenges Walmart's position in the competitive U.S. market

Kroger, one of the most important supermarket chains in the United States, has just announced a measure that could change the competitive dynamics in the retail sector. This decision comes at a time when competition with giants like Walmart and Costco is increasingly fierce.

Starting this Wednesday, Kroger launches a Senior Discount Day, an initiative that grants a 5% discount on purchases to customers aged 55 or older. This promotion will be available for purchases in physical stores, as well as for pickup and delivery orders.

Kroger has made clear its goal of supporting its senior customers with this special offer. By showing a Kroger loyalty card or identification, customers can access the discount, which doesn't apply to products like alcohol, tobacco, fuel, gift cards, and medications.

According to Shayna Barrett, Kroger's Director of Corporate Affairs, "we are proud to support our senior customers with meaningful ways to save." This measure is a way to build loyalty with this segment of the population and differentiate from competitors like Walmart, which doesn't have a similar discount program, according to MSN.

The discount is also available for online purchases and pickup orders, making it easier for a larger number of customers to participate. Additionally, Kroger has added more ways to save, such as the ability to use Medicare Advantage benefit cards for additional discounts. This gives the company a competitive advantage in a market where building loyalty with senior customers is key.

Expansion of its catalog for 2025

Kroger is not only focusing on discounts but also has ambitious plans for the future. In 2025, the company will launch more than 900 products under its private brands. These new products include everything from fresh foods to everyday items, which will expand the variety available to consumers. With this expansion, Kroger aims to offer more options at affordable prices without sacrificing quality.

The expansion of its catalog is part of a strategy to compete directly with the giants of the sector. While Walmart focuses on low prices and convenience, and Costco does so on wholesale sales, Kroger seeks to attract consumers who prefer greater variety and quality. Private brands like Simple Truth and Private Selection are key in this plan, offering products that can compete with options from Costco and Walmart.

Kroger has also improved its online presence, recognizing the importance of digital shopping. This adds to its omnichannel strategy, which combines the best of traditional and digital commerce. Additionally, the company has renovated its physical stores and continues to open new locations, allowing it to adapt to the needs of the modern consumer.
