Goodbye to another famous chain in the US: it starts today, massive store closure
The massive store closures mark a significant shift in the retail landscape of the United States this 2025
In the world of retail, not all companies face their end in the same way. Some struggle to stay afloat, prolonging the inevitable outcome with efforts that often result in losses. The reality is that many companies don't recognize in time that the market has changed and that their model is no longer viable.
Today marks the beginning of the massive closure of Next Adventure, a well-known chain in the outdoor activity gear sector. After 28 years of operation, its founders have decided to step aside and close all the stores, ending a chapter that began with much hope and sacrifices. This decision marks an important moment for the retail industry in the United States, reflecting how consumer conditions and preferences constantly evolve.

From a Small Dream to a Consolidated Chain
Next Adventure, a store based in Portland, Oregon, was born in 1997 thanks to the vision of two lifelong friends, Deek Heykamp and Bryan Knudsen. Both sacrificed a lot: Deek sold his shoe repair businesses and Bryan sold his house to move to Portland and join the project. They started with a modest space of just 1,600 sq. ft. (148.64 square meters), slightly larger than a small café.
What began as a business of new and second-hand outdoor equipment became a local reference, with a loyal community, according to The Street. The store offered not only products but also an experience for those who enjoy nature and the outdoors. Perseverance and teamwork grew the chain over the years, becoming a pillar of retail in the region.

The Decision to Close: An End with Respect and Gratitude
Aware that every cycle comes to an end, the pair decided to retire and close the company on good terms. They communicated this on their website, thanking their customers, employees, and followers for the constant support. The store is closing its online store today, May 19, inviting shoppers to take advantage of the last days to place orders.
Additionally, the total liquidation in the four physical stores will begin on May 28, 2025, with special offers for those who arrive early. The company also reported that it will continue accepting gift cards until May 25 but will stop issuing them from that date. Currently, Next Adventure continues buying used equipment, although it will soon cease this activity, announcing more details soon.
The closure of this chain represents not only the end of a business but also the closing of an important chapter for the community and the retail market. The story of Next Adventure is an example of how success is born from effort and passion, but also from the need to know when it's time to say goodbye.
