Costco makes a historic decision in the U.S.: its members are already celebrating it
Costco is betting on a change that's already generating positive comments among their most loyal customers
Costco is mainly known for their bulk products and their irresistible snacks that attract millions of loyal shoppers. However, the company is about to make a surprising shift that will change how they operate. This new development has caused great anticipation among their members, who are already showing their excitement.
It was recently announced that Costco will open their first standalone gas station in Mission Viejo, California. This new station, with 40 pumps, will be the largest the chain has had so far. The opening is scheduled for spring 2026 and will sell Kirkland Signature brand gasoline, known for its high quality and its benefits for engines.

A strategic move to expand their offerings
Since 1995, Costco has already had gas stations inside some of their warehouses, but this will be the first time they open a standalone gas station, with no store or additional products. According to the company, their gasoline is formulated with additives that clean the engine, improve performance, and reduce polluting emissions. This combination promises not only savings, but also better vehicle care for their customers.
The mayor of Mission Viejo, Bob Resch, told CSP Daily News that the city is "very excited" and sees Costco as a "new partner" for the Freeway Center. The station will be built on the site previously occupied by a Bed Bath & Beyond, which recently closed. According to municipal documents, about 9,500 vehicles are expected to pass through the gas station daily, which represents a significant boost for the local economy.
Exclusivity for members and expectations of success
The fuel service will be exclusive to Costco members, who pay between $65 and $130 per year for their membership. This keeps the business model based on loyalty and on offering preferential prices to their most loyal customers. At the stations inside the warehouses, gasoline prices are already known for being low and exclusive to members.

It is important to note that this station will not have a convenience store or offer typical Costco foods, such as the famous hot dog or rotisserie chicken. However, users will be able to visit the nearest Costco warehouse, located just 1.2 mi (2 km) away, to enjoy their favorite products after filling up their car's tank.
With this move, Costco is not only expanding their services, but also strengthening their commitment to quality and exclusivity for their members. Expectations are high and many already see this gas station as a great additional benefit when becoming a member or renewing their membership. The arrival of this station could mark a turning point in Costco's expansion strategy in the United States.
