Neither Aldi nor Lidl: This Is the Worst Juice in the Supermarket in Spain, According to the OCU

This Popular Juice Tops OCU's List of the Worst Sold in Spanish Supermarkets

Bad news for thousands of consumers in Spain. In a country like ours, where juices are one of the favorite drinks, especially for the little ones, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has left more than one person speechless.

After analyzing 97 juice and nectar products in major supermarkets, the results have been surprising. One of the most harmful to health is at the same time one of the most popular among consumers.

This Is the Worst Juice in the Supermarket, According to the OCU

The worst juice according to the OCU's analysis is the nectar La Merienda Picnic de Don Simón. It has rated this product as the worst among all analyzed, mainly due to its alarming sugar content. This nectar, which contains only 50% fruit (banana, grape, and orange), has a high content of sugar and glucose-fructose syrup.

Each 200-milliliter (6.76 fl. oz.) brick has a total of 24.6 grams (0.87 oz.) of sugar. This is equivalent to almost six teaspoons of sugar per small carton. Something that not only exceeds the recommended limits for the little ones but is also a health risk for any consumer.

Why Are Juices So Popular in Spain?

Juice is considered by many as a healthy option to start the day, especially natural fruit juices. However, the reality is that many of the products we find in supermarkets are nectars and processed drinks that, although they contain some fruit, are loaded with added sugars. Instead of offering only the benefits of the fruit, these products end up being a source of empty calories.

Excessive sugar consumption has a direct relationship with health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and even cardiovascular diseases. Although brands like Don Simón are very popular, it is important for consumers to be aware of what they are really ingesting.

How to Choose a Healthier Juice?

The first thing you should do when choosing a juice is to read the label carefully. Avoid products that contain large amounts of added sugar or glucose syrup. Instead, look for options that have a fruit content higher than 80% and, if possible, select those that do not contain added sugars.

Additionally, it is important to consider the number of calories per serving. Although juices may seem like a healthy option, excess sugar can turn them into an enemy for your health if not consumed in moderation. It is essential to opt for juices that comply with the OCU's guidelines and that truly provide nutritional benefits without compromising health.
