Who Is Calin Georgescu, Patriotic Leader in Romania, Whose Candidacy Is Rejected?
Romania's Central Electoral Office rejects the patriot leader's candidacy when he was leading all the polls
The Central Electoral Office of Romania has decided to reject the candidacy of the sovereigntist leader Călin Georgescu for the presidential elections, despite leading all the polls. The resolution, adopted this Sunday with a vote of ten to four, has provoked an immediate reaction among his supporters.
Thousands of people have taken to the streets to protest forcefully and have torn down the security barriers installed by the gendarmes in front of the electoral body's headquarters.
According to sources cited by the media outlet G4Media, the candidacy was dismissed due to "irregularities both in form and substance." One of the key factors in the decision was the asset declaration submitted by Georgescu, which showed inconsistencies compared to the one registered in the November 2024 elections. Although no evidence of crimes has been found, this detail would have been decisive in preventing his candidacy.

The ruling has caused outrage among his political allies. George Simion, president of the sovereigntist party AUR, has described the measure as a "new abuse" and linked it to what he considers a "coup d'état initiated on December 6."
Both he and other leaders allied with Georgescu have demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu. Anamaria Gavrilă, representative of POT, has also condemned the decision, asserting that the documents submitted by Georgescu met all legal requirements.
Meanwhile, in the same session, the Electoral Office evaluated the candidacy of Nicușor Dan, who registered on the same day as Georgescu. However, his candidacy was approved without objections, which has increased suspicions of a possible ideological motivation behind the refusal of Georgescu.
At 62 years old, Călin Georgescu has a background from the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, in addition to having studied at the National Defense School. He has worked as a university professor, held positions in the Ministry of Environment, and represented Romania in the national committee of the United Nations Environment Program.

Although he has not always been a widely recognized figure, his name is not unfamiliar in the political landscape. The Alliance for the Union of Romanians, a patriot-oriented party, proposed him as a candidate for prime minister in 2020 and 2021.
In recent years, Georgescu has managed to capture public attention, especially on TikTok, where he has amassed 3.4M followers. His videos, in which he can be seen attending church, training, and participating in interviews, have been key to his growing popularity.
