Who Are the Socialists Accused of 'gender Violence' Awarded by Equality?

The Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, has defended the decision by arguing that both awardees have contributed significantly to the promotion of equality.

The Ministry of Equality Awarded the Medal for the Promotion of Equality Values to Juan Fernando López Aguilar and Fernando Valdés. This decision has caused controversy because both were previously accused of alleged cases of gender violence.

Juan Fernando López Aguilar, former Minister of Justice and Socialist MEP, was accused in 2015 of alleged abuse of his ex-wife. Although the case was dismissed by the Supreme Court due to lack of conclusive evidence, the shadow of the accusation persists in public opinion.

Meanwhile, Fernando Valdés, who was a magistrate of the Constitutional Court, resigned from his position in 2020 after being accused of a gender violence offense against his wife. Although the case was also dismissed, the controversy surrounding his figure has not dissipated.

The awarding of these medals has sparked criticism from various sectors of society. The coherence of the Ministry of Equality is questioned for awarding individuals who, although legally exonerated, have been involved in allegations of gender violence. This situation highlights an apparent contradiction in the ministry's policies of recognition and promotion of equality values.

The Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, has defended the decision by arguing that both awardees have significantly contributed to the promotion of equality and the elimination of discrimination.

However, this stance has been met with skepticism by the public. Those who believe that awarding individuals with a history of allegations sends a contradictory message and may undermine the credibility of the institutions.

Defenders of Women's Equality Are Allegedly ''Their Harassers''

The general coordinator of Izquierda Unida in the Balearic Islands, Juanjo Martínez, has been dismissed from his position. This decision comes after the emergence of multiple anonymous allegations on social media accusing him of alleged sexual abuse. The spokesperson for Podemos in the Palma City Council, Lucía Muñoz, justified the dismissal due to a "loss of confidence" in Martínez.

The accusations emerged on an Instagram account dedicated to reporting abuses in the Balearic Islands. In the testimonies, several women describe Martínez as a "sexual predator" who used his political position to coerce and manipulate for sexual purposes. Some accusers claim he promised positions in exchange for sexual favors and maintained degrading treatment in the intimate sphere.

Despite the seriousness of the accusations, Martínez has expressed his surprise at the dismissal. In statements to Europa Press, he said: "No one has called me or sent me a message." He also noted that he has not received official communication from the spokesperson for Podemos in the Palma City Council, Lucía Muñoz, who delegated representation in the EMT to him.
