Pedro Sánchez's waste ruins Spain: record spending and more taxes

The Government increases spending by 200 billion, but infrastructure and services remain in decline

Since Pedro Sánchez's arrival in the government in 2018, public spending has grown at an alarming rate. The state's expenditure has increased by 200 billion euros, rising from 480 billion in 2017 to 680 billion in 2023.

This figure represents a 41% increase, an unprecedented growth that has skyrocketed debt and forced an increase in tax pressure on citizens.

To sustain this exorbitant spending, the government has resorted to a massive tax hike. In 2017, tax revenue amounted to 444 billion euros, while in 2023 it reached 628 billion, an increase of 184 billion.

This increase, also 41%, hasn't translated into significant improvements in infrastructure or public services. Something that generates growing discontent among the population.

Citizens' incomes don't grow at the same rate

While public spending and taxes are skyrocketing, citizens' incomes have grown at a much slower pace.

According to the National Institute of Statistics, the average salary in Spain has risen from 23,647 euros in 2017 to 26,949 euros in 2022, which represents a 14% increase.
