Trump signs orders to reshape the US Army and ban service for trans individuals
One of the most notable executive orders is the prohibition of transgender members serving in the United States Army.
Donald Trump has begun to "restore the honor and military might of the U.S." after signing four executive orders. The measures affect policies implemented during the Biden Administration, especially those related to diversity and vaccination.
One of the most notable executive orders is the prohibition of transgender members serving in the United States Army. Trump revoked a Biden provision that allowed the incorporation of transgender people.
This measure goes beyond the revocation, as it establishes new rules on gender pronouns. Mental and physical care for trans members is also prohibited.
Additionally, the Trump Administration will eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs within the armed forces, removing Biden's initiatives.
These DEI policies, promoted by Biden, will be replaced by an approach that, according to Trump, will restore the "traditional spirit" of the U.S. Army. The executive orders were signed coinciding with Pete Hegseth's arrival at the Pentagon, who was confirmed as the new Secretary of Defense.
Hegseth, in his first public intervention, announced that "more executive orders are on the way" to continue with the Army's reforms. One of the most controversial measures is the reinstatement of more than 8,000 soldiers dismissed for refusing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
The White House reported that soldiers who were discharged between 2021 and 2023 will be reinstated, and their benefits will be returned. The order establishes that active and reserve military personnel who have been dismissed for their refusal to vaccinate may request reinstatement.
The Biden Administration had implemented these dismissals with the aim of controlling the pandemic, but many of those affected considered the measure unfair. Trump believes that the reinstatement of the purged soldiers is a fair measure that will restore order and morale within the armed forces.
Additionally, the reform seeks to return the armed forces to their main mission: national defense, without distracting them with internal political issues. With the signing of these orders, Trump presents a more conservative approach for the armed forces, in contrast to the inclusive policies of the Biden Administration.
The measures also reflect Trump's intention to strengthen the military readiness of the United States, without compromising operational efficiency. Despite the criticisms and controversies, these reforms are seen as a key step in Trump's agenda to rebuild what he considers the ideal Army.
The remodeling of the Army could continue to be a central topic in the U.S. political debate. Trump has made it clear that he will continue with his reform plan.
