This Is What It Costs Daily to Maintain a Mena
This data highlights the growing social concern about illegal immigration
Illegal immigration continues to be a hot topic of debate. Guillermo Sánchez, president of the Instituto Mallorquín de Asuntos Sociales (IMAS), spoke about the issue on the program 4Directe, where he shared a shocking figure. More specifically, the cost of maintaining each unjoined minor amounts to 239 euros per day.
This data highlights the growing social concern about illegal immigration. It is a topic that, with the most recent figures, has captured even more public attention.

According to the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas, which published these data last year and were reported by the newspaper ABC, the situation worsens in the Canary Islands. In January 2025 alone, the archipelago received 72 boats with nearly 5,000 irregular immigrants. This makes it the second January with the highest arrivals of immigrants, only surpassed by 2024.
The report revealed by La Gaceta indicates that of the 72 boats, 95.8% (69) departed from Moroccan coasts or from areas of Western Sahara under Moroccan control. This highlights a serious lack of control in the countries of origin, especially in the mentioned areas.
Regarding the profile of the immigrants, the report highlights that the vast majority of those who arrived are adult men, representing 88% of the total. Only 7% are women, while the remaining 5% are minors, mostly males. This imbalance highlights the male predominance among the migrants.

The Guardia Civil warns that if the current pull effect persists, illegal immigration to the Canary Islands will not decrease.
Meanwhile, Pedro Sánchez's government has announced an investment of more than 111 million euros to improve rescue operations at sea. The funds will be allocated to the acquisition of new boats and a helicopter.
Also to the construction of a new Maritime Rescue coordination center in Palma, which will replace the current rented building. These measures are part of the National Maritime Rescue Plan 2025-2027. With a total budget of 163 million euros, which will be approved in the next Consejo de Ministros.
