Princess Irene, Sister of Queen Sofía, Makes a Decision That Will Change Everything

Princess Irene, Queen Sofia's sister, has chosen to gradually step away from public life

Princess Irene, sister of Queen Sofía, has made a decision that will mark a turning point for her: gradually disappearing from public life. Evidence of this is what recently happened on the island of Mallorca.

Last Monday, April 14, the Queen Emeritus presided over the traditional Easter concert, which was performed by the prestigious Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands. An event in which the Coral Universitat de les Illes Balears also participated.

This event, held at the Cathedral of Mallorca, aims to raise funds for Projecte Home Balears, an organization that helps people with addictions reclaim their lives.

However, unlike previous years, this time Queen Sofía attended without the company of Princess Irene. A detail that has drawn attention, as she always used to be by her side at this type of event, especially those related to music, one of her passions.

The aunt of Felipe VI had attended the last editions of the concert, thus becoming her sister's best companion. However, she has been suffering from mobility issues for some time.

So much so that, currently, Princess Irene needs a wheelchair to move, a limitation that may have prevented her from attending this time in Palma with Queen Sofía.

One of Princess Irene's last appearances was in February of this year. Despite her ailments, Queen Sofía's sister traveled to Greece to attend Prince Nicolás's wedding.

She was also seen last November in Madrid, where she received an emotional tribute at the Teatro Real during one of the Queen Emeritus's usual musical events.

Meanwhile, at Monday's concert, Queen Sofía was not alone despite the absence of her sister, Princess Irene. As we could see, the Emeritus was accompanied by Marga Prohens, President of the Balearic Islands. The mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez Llabrés, also attended, among other authorities.

The piece performed was the "Fauré's Requiem," composed by Gabriel Fauré in 1888. It is a musical piece created for a funeral mass at the Church of the Madeleine in Paris.

Apart from this event, there are no more official acts on the royal family's agenda for this Holy Week. However, Queen Sofía plans to travel to Seville to attend La Madrugá.

According to ¡Hola!, Princess Irene's sister will be present on the night from Holy Thursday to Good Friday, as it is one of the most emblematic processions in our country.
