The agreement reached between PP, PSOE, and Sumar to exclude VOX
Santiago Abascal's party doesn't give up and has announced that measures will be taken
A pact that harms VOX. The Partido Popular, together with PSOE and Sumar, has decided to prevent VOX's presence in the Central Electoral Board (JEC). Let's remember that it is the body responsible for ensuring transparency and the proper functioning of elections in Spain.
It is a decision included within a pact formalized by the three aforementioned parties. This pact was agreed upon to select the five professors that Congress must appoint to this body, whose positions haven't been renewed for more than a year and a half.
This Monday, the Congress Appointments Committee will examine the candidates. Additionally, it is expected that the Chamber's Board will approve their appointment on Tuesday thanks to the majority formed by PSOE and Sumar. The five professors proposed to join the body are Francisco Javier García Roca, María Luz Martínez Alarcón, María da Alba Nogueira López, Javier Tajadura Tejada, and Carlos José Vidal Prado.
The new configuration leaves VOX out, as explained by La Gaceta. This has caused discontent in Santiago Abascal's party, which accuses the PP of maneuvering to exclude it and give a seat to Sumar, despite having less parliamentary representation.
It should be mentioned that the Central Electoral Board is a body established by the Constitution used to oversee the legality of electoral processes. According to the Organic Law of the General Electoral Regime, the Central Electoral Board is defined by a group of eight Supreme Court judges. Chosen by lottery, and five professors specialized in Law, Political Science, or Sociology, whose appointment is made based on the representation of the parties in Congress.
According to the regulations, the renewal of the Central Electoral Board must be carried out within 90 days after an election. After the July 2023 elections, the JEC continued in office for more than a year.
This was due to the lack of agreement between PSOE and PP. Finally, in a scenario of great political tension, both parties reached a pact with Sumar, which resulted in the exclusion of VOX.
Faced with this situation, Santiago Abascal's party doesn't give up and has announced that measures will be taken, denouncing this situation as an "arbitrary exclusion." A decision that breaks with the criterion of parliamentary representation.
