Nine People Convicted for Boycotting a Vox Event in Bilbao in 2019
After the corresponding trial, nine of those involved were sentenced to prison terms ranging from four to ten months.
On November 5, 2019, days before the general elections, Vox attempted to hold a political event in Plaza de la Encarnación in Bilbao. A group of approximately 150 people gathered at the location and hurled insults such as "sons of bitches, fascists, racists, and homophobes" at the Vox members present.
Among the attendees was Nerea Alzola, the lead candidate for Congress for Vizcaya, who was assaulted by a woman and threatened by another person who claimed to know her address.

The Ertzaintza established a police cordon with officers equipped with riot gear to separate the protesters from the Vox supporters. Despite the police presence, the electoral event could not proceed as planned.
It was not until 8:00 p.m. that the candidate and the Vox supporters were able to leave the area. After fearing for their physical safety due to the violence demonstrated by the protesters. One of the individuals managed to breach the police cordon, although he was subsequently subdued.
Following the corresponding trial, nine of those involved were sentenced to prison terms ranging from four to ten months. The charges included threats, assault, resisting authority, and violation of the electoral law.
The judge found it proven that the accused attempted to prevent the political event through insults, threats, and assaults. Creating a tense situation that hindered its normal development.
Vox has expressed satisfaction with the verdict. Although it considers the sentences insufficient in relation to the severity of the events that occurred in Plaza de la Encarnación.
Furthermore, it regrets that no political party with representation in the Basque institutions has condemned these acts that seek to curtail freedom of expression.
This incident is part of a series of similar events where Vox's acts have been subject to boycotts and violent demonstrations. The political formation has repeatedly denounced the lack of condemnation from other political forces and has requested greater protective measures. This to ensure the exercise of their rights in the public sphere.

The verdict aims to set a precedent in the protection of essential rights. Such as freedom of expression and assembly, against acts of violence and intimidation. This judicial ruling is expected to deter future attempts to curtail political activity through the use of force or threats.
The Ertzaintza has reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety at public events and protecting the exercise of democratic rights of all formations. It has also called on the public to express their disagreements in a peaceful and respectful manner. Avoiding engaging in criminal behavior that undermines public order and the rights of others.
