Begoña Carrasco receives the 'Active Running Cities' distinction for Castellón
A recognition awarded by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation to cities that promote urban sports practice
The mayor of Castellón, Begoña Carrasco, has received the "Active Running Cities" distinction for the city of Castellón in Madrid, an acknowledgment granted by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation to cities that promote sports in urban environments. The event took place at the headquarters of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), within the framework of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR). Accompanying the mayor were the Councilor for Sports, Maica Hurtado, and other sports figures, such as Alejandro Blanco, president of the COE, and Raúl Chapado, president of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation.
Carrasco highlighted that Castellón was the first Spanish city to join this program, emphasizing the city's commitment to sports as a driver of social transformation. "This distinction strengthens us and encourages us to continue working to establish Castellón as a true sports capital," stated the mayor.
Castellón, a global reference in athletics
The mayor recalled that Castellón is a global reference in the field of athletics and running, with the Club Playas de Castellón, the best athletics club in the history of Spain and Europe. "We are in the elite, and with this alliance, we aim to continue promoting physical activity and running," added Carrasco.
Sports and health accessible to all
Begoña Carrasco also highlighted the positive impact of sports in the city, not only in the practice of athletics but also in citizen well-being. She emphasized the calendar of international sporting events, such as the bp Castellón Marathon, the 10K FACSA, and the Half Marathon, and also mentioned inclusive activities that promote school sports and active aging. Castellón presents itself as an ideal place for sports throughout the year thanks to its mild climate, varied orography, and urban spaces adapted for urban running.
A model of an active and healthy city
The mayor explained that Castellón has been designed as an ideal city for sports, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year and spaces like the Rondas and urban parks adapted for runners. She also highlighted the positive impact that sports have on tourism and the local economy, as it attracts visitors throughout the year and generates employment in sectors such as hospitality and commerce.

Finally, Begoña Carrasco reaffirmed the commitment of the Castellón City Council to continue supporting sports and physical activity. "To achieve more active and healthy cities, sports must be a priority on the political agenda of our institutions," concluded the mayor.
