Barçala supports Marina Hernández as the 2025 Flag Bearer for the Moors and Christians

Barçala: 'These festivities reinforce Alicante's projection and consolidate one of its main identity markers'

The mayor of Alicante, Luis Barçala, attended this Sunday the proclamation of Marina Hernández García, from the Caballeros del Cid (El Rebolledo) troupe, as the 2025 Standard Bearer of the Federation of Moors and Christians of Alicante (FMYCA). The event, presided over by José Pascual Saura, also featured the participation of the Councilor for Festivities, Cristina Cutanda, and other municipal representatives.

Barçala highlighted that these festivities, recognized as of Tourist Interest by the Generalitat, "enhance Alicante's projection and consolidate one of its main identity markers."

The ceremony and its theme 'Eclipse'

The event marked the handover from Mari Carmen Reus Ponzó, the 2024 Standard Bearer, who belongs to the Tuaregs (Altozano) troupe. With the theme 'Eclipse,' the ceremony symbolized the fusion of Moorish and Christian cultures, the central axis of these festivities.

During the event, audiovisuals supported by Artificial Intelligence were projected, highlighting the origins and importance of sunlight in the celebrations. Gisella Comíns's ballet offered two performances: one dedicated to the Moon, in honor of the outgoing Standard Bearer, and another to the Sun, in tribute to Marina Hernández.

The president of the Union of Festive Entities of Moors and Christians (UNDEF), Pepa Prats, as well as leaders of troupes from San Blas, Villafranqueza-El Palamó, El Rebolledo, and Altozano, were present, joining the local Standard Bearers from each district.

The event concluded with the performance of the pasodoble 'Alicante Mora y Cristiana,' the official anthem of the FMYCA, composed by Rubén Urbán.

With nearly 2,000 revelers participating in the Moors and Christians of Alicante, this celebration is established as one of the city's most emblematic. Barçala reiterated the City Council's commitment to these traditions, which are essential for the cultural heritage and international projection of Alicante.
