Alicante City Council Promotes Social Rehabilitation in the City
Carlos de Juan has emphasized that 'this project is a priority within municipal policies to expand the social housing stock and promote youth emancipation'
The Alicante City Council has approved the basic project for the rehabilitation of 14 social housing units in the San Gabriel neighborhood, with an investment of 1,380,637.51 euros and a completion period of 10 months. The initiative, driven by the Municipal Housing Board, aims to facilitate access to housing for young people through social rent.
The councilor responsible for the area, Carlos de Juan, has highlighted that "this project is a priority within municipal policies to expand the social housing stock and promote youth emancipation." The action adds to other initiatives such as the promotion of 15 homes in El Portón, which will be completed in August, and the 32 homes planned in San Blas for this year.
The building, located at 1 Fernando Díaz de Mendoza Street, formerly intended for teachers' housing, will be completely rehabilitated to offer 14 one-bedroom apartments, four more than currently. Additionally, an elevator will be installed to ensure accessibility, and an adapted apartment will be provided on the ground floor for people with reduced mobility, in compliance with current accessibility regulations.
The rehabilitation will include energy improvements to achieve an 80% reduction in non-renewable primary energy consumption, thanks to the action on the building's envelope and installations. The project's funding has been requested from the European Next Generation EU funds, framed within the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.
The project also includes the redistribution of floors, the provision of telecommunications infrastructure, and the improvement of the urban image of the surroundings. The company Belmonte Botella, S.L.P. has been responsible for drafting the project, which was presented in January 2025.
The forecast is that the works will be awarded by the end of summer, with the aim of starting the action immediately, thus reinforcing the council's commitment to social housing and residential inclusion.
