They announce sad news about the royal family: King Felipe and his sisters know it

It is confirmed that Infanta Cristina will not return to official events, while Infanta Elena regains prominence

A sad piece of news related to the Royal Family has come to light and is already known by King Felipe and his sisters. According to Zarzuela's circle, a final decision has been made regarding Infanta Cristina: she will no longer participate in official acts of the Crown. In contrast, Infanta Elena has been partially readmitted and her institutional presence is beginning to regain prominence.

This decision, as reported by Monarquía Confidencial, is not new to the Royal Family, but it has now been released with greater clarity. Cristina de Borbón, marked by her involvement in the Nóos Case, will not have official duties again. Why does Zarzuela allow one sister but not the other?

King Felipe improves the relationship with his sisters, Elena and Cristina

In June 2014, the then Prince of Asturias assumed the throne after the unexpected abdication of his father. King Felipe undertook a deep renewal of the institution, focused on regaining public trust and safeguarding the future of his daughters. Among the most relevant measures were changes to the official agenda, but also a drastic reduction in the visibility of Elena and Cristina.

The context was not favorable, since both were divorced and Cristina's legal situation caused controversy. Little by little, they were removed from official acts. Years later, the Crown keeps that line firm, although in the case of Elena de Borbón, certain exceptions have been made.

Despite the institutional distance, the family ties between the siblings seem to have improved over time. One example was the joint arrival of Felipe and Cristina at the wedding of Victoria López-Quesada and Enrique Moreno de la Cova. However, this public reappearance doesn't mean there is a return to the institutional sphere for the Duchess of Palma.

Meanwhile, Infanta Elena has occasionally resumed her representative role. Her latest appearance will be this June 5, at the awards ceremony for the Children's and Youth Painting Contest organized by Patrimonio Nacional. Although it is a minor event, her institutional presence is significant in terms of strategy and political message.

Royal Household makes it clear that Infanta Cristina will not have official acts again

As Monarquía Confidencial indicates, Zarzuela doesn't consider that Infanta Cristina will have institutional duties again. This decision is not new, but it has been reaffirmed recently in response to inquiries from some sectors. "Since she had to testify in the Nóos Case, Zarzuela was clear that she would not have an institutional role," they state.

The lack of trust toward Cristina remains, even a decade after the case broke out. In addition, her own will doesn't seem oriented toward public life. "The Infanta is also at a different point in her life and all she wants is to go unnoticed," they conclude in the same outlet.

While Elena regains some visibility, Cristina de Borbón continues living between Switzerland and Spain, focused on her private life and her children. Her withdrawal from the public eye seems voluntary, but it is also determined by the limitations imposed by the Royal Household.

The memories of the trial, her image in handcuffs, and the reputational damage suffered still weigh heavily. Although a decade has already passed, there has been no gesture suggesting that her institutional return is viable. In fact, everything indicates that Zarzuela considers her figure no longer recoverable in terms of public image.

Infanta Elena regains her institutional role

In contrast, Infanta Elena has been slowly reinstated. Trust in her has not been completely lost and her figure is once again present at small official events. This reactivation has been well received both inside and outside the institution, especially by those who remember her institutional role in the 1990s and 2000s.

María José Gómez Verdú, a protocol expert, analyzes this return from a symbolic perspective. "If we look to the past, one of the most striking cases during the 1990s and early 2000s was Elena de Borbón. She took on an active role in official acts, inaugurations, cultural visits, and charitable commitments," she explains in Lecturas.

Infanta Elena was also a pioneer in several respects. She was the first university graduate in the family, married in public, and was very close to the people. That stable and committed image has remained in the collective memory, and her return offers a useful, trustworthy, and scandal-free profile.

In the eyes of many citizens, Infanta Elena embodies a classic and respected figure. "She was the stable, classic, and trustworthy figure, compared to a younger sister who was more in the media and a brother heir still in training," says María José. Her exclusion after her brother's accession to the throne was a symbolic blow, but also a strategic one.

Her knowledge of protocol, her natural attitude, and her willingness to fulfill tasks without seeking the spotlight make her an effective ally for the monarchy. "Elena's withdrawal deprived the institution of a valuable asset: a figure who knew protocol, accepted her position naturally, and represented continuity without conflict," María José concludes.

The decision to exclude Infanta Cristina from any official act, while Infanta Elena begins to regain prominence, shows a strategic shift in Royal Family. Although family ties are kept, King Felipe has drawn a clear line in his public image policy. Is this the beginning of a gradual reintegration or an isolated move?
