Nobody Expected It: Banco Santander, BBVA, and CaixaBank Could No Longer Hide It
The country's three main banks confirm something most of their clients didn't expect
Three of the largest banks in Spain, Banco Santander, BBVA, and CaixaBank, have revealed data that have surprised many users. They have led the acquisition of new customers in 2024, exceeding growth expectations in a banking sector that continues to evolve.
This increase in customers has coincided with a general growth in the Spanish population, which for the first time has surpassed 49 million inhabitants. But not only that, the sector has also been boosted by the competitive conditions and promotions these entities are offering in their products.
BBVA, the Big Winner
BBVA has stood out as the leader in customer acquisition during 2024, with a total of 11.4 million gross customers globally. Of these, more than 10% have been acquired in Spain. This means approximately 1.2 million new customers in our country.

This increase is a clear indication that it has managed to attract a large number of new users, especially thanks to its value proposition in financial products and its global presence.
The strong growth in customers is not only due to the improvement in the product offering. It is also due to the increase in population, particularly concerning immigration, a key factor for the growth of the banking sector. BBVA has managed to position itself as one of the preferred entities for new residents.
Banco Santander Doesn't Lag Behind
Meanwhile, Banco Santander has also reached historic figures in terms of new customers, with a total of 8 million new customers. This brings the bank's total number of customers to 173 million worldwide.
In Spain, the entity has gained 442,000 new customers in 2024, representing significant growth for the bank. This increase has been driven both by the attractive conditions of its products and by the expansion of its services in areas such as digitalization. This has benefited many users who prefer to manage their finances more efficiently and conveniently from their mobile devices.

CaixaBank, Solid Growth in Net Customers
On the other hand, CaixaBank has also achieved remarkable figures, reaching 20.3 million customers across the group. Of this total, an impressive 91% is located in Spain. This demonstrates the entity's strong bond with the local market.
In 2024, CaixaBank has gained 280,000 new net customers. This is a figure that reflects the trust users have in its financial products. These include everything from checking accounts to mortgages and personal loans.
CaixaBank's growth is not only due to the population increase. It is also due to the entity's aggressive commercial strategy, which has launched several promotions and special conditions to attract more customers. Savings offers, ease in obtaining credits, and the digitalization of its services have been determining factors.
