Amadeo I of Savoy was proclaimed King of Spain in 1871 after the Glorious Revolution that overthrew Isabel II. His reign, however, was brief, abdicating in 1873 due to the country's political instability. During his short mandate, coins were minted with his effigy, with the 100 pesetas from 1871 being one of the most notable.
This coin was minted in 900 thousandths gold, with a diameter of 1.42 in. (36 mm) and a weight of 1.14 oz. (32.25 g). On the obverse, it features the inscription "AMADEO I REY DE ESPAÑA" along with the date "1871" and the initials "L·M·", corresponding to the engraver Luis Marchionni. The reverse shows the oval shield of Spain, adorned and crowned, with the legend "LEY 900 MILESIMAS 31 PIEZAS EN KILOG· S·D· 100 PESETAS ·M·".
The Value of This Ancient 100 Pesetas Coin
The scarcity of this coin is due to the limited number of specimens minted. It is estimated that originally around 12 units were produced, intended for prominent personalities of the time. Currently, fewer than eight specimens are known, which increases its value among collectors.
In January 2018, one of these coins was auctioned in Madrid by the numismatic house Cayón. At that time, it reached a hammer price of no less than 164,000 euros, exceeding its starting price by 64,000 euros.
