Naturgy Leads Energy Transition With This Massive Investment

UFD, Naturgy's distributor, digitalizes and improves infrastructure for a more efficient electrical grid.

Naturgy's commitment to the energy transition continues to grow through its distributor UFD, which will invest 1.34 billion euros until 2027.

This effort will be key to modernizing and digitalizing the electrical infrastructure in Spain, aiming to improve service, increase reliability and contribute to the sustainability of the energy system.

The company has a significant presence in Galicia, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León and the Community of Madrid, where UFD distributes electricity to nearly 3.8 million supply points.

With a network of 72,079 miles (116,000 km) of power lines and 400 substations, UFD is the main distributor in Galicia, where it will invest 590 million euros in the period 2024-2027.

Innovation at the Service of Efficiency

UFD's investments will focus on the innovation and digitalization of the network, with projects including remote metering, sensorization and the integration of new technologies.

Notable is the use of long-range drones and Artificial Intelligence for the maintenance of overhead lines, as well as the digitalization of substations to monitor assets in real time.

Additionally, the company will implement an autonomous system to optimize the network, improving efficiency and service quality.

AI also plays a crucial role in the TAIS (Telesupervision Artificial Intelligence System) project, which applies advanced algorithms to more effectively supervise network operations.

This digitalization will allow for more precise management of electricity consumption, enabling users to optimize their energy demand and contribute to sustainability.

Contribution to Sustainability and Safety

One of UFD's most notable projects is the initiative for forest fire detection using IoT sensors and AI, which uses towers and power lines as surveillance points.

This system, recognized for its innovation, aims to protect large forest areas, starting in the Gerês-Xurés Transboundary Biosphere Reserve in Galicia.

Photovoltaic energy powers these devices, allowing them to operate uninterrupted, 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

UFD is also committed to vegetation control on its power lines through sustainable methods, such as controlled grazing of native livestock.

This practice not only improves network efficiency but also contributes to environmental preservation.

Improvement of Infrastructure and Service Quality

The company plans a significant reinforcement of infrastructure, with new substations and power lines that will improve supply quality in various regions.

In the Community of Madrid, for example, UFD will expand several substations and build new facilities to meet growing demand.

Thanks to digitalization and the application of advanced technologies, service quality has improved significantly.

In the last five years, UFD has reduced supply interruption time by 27%, achieving a reliability of 99.99%.

This effort has been possible thanks to the implementation of predictive methodologies and the continuous improvement of infrastructure.

Investment in the Energy Future

The investment planned by UFD will also contribute to meeting the objectives of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) for 2030, which seeks the integration of more than 120 GW of renewable energy.

This commitment to the modernization and expansion of the power grid is essential to move toward a more sustainable and efficient energy system.

The digitalization of electricity distribution networks is essential for the energy transition, allowing the integration of renewable sources and supporting self-consumption and distributed generation.
