More trips, shorter and budget-controlled: this is how families will travel
Fernando Barcenilla, Head of Travel Line of Business at Allianz Partners Spain
Global tourism continues to grow. It is expected that by 2025 travelers will increase the number of trips per year while controlling spending and being concerned about the economic situation. In this regard, families with children play a key role in the development of the sector. These are some of the conclusions that Fernando Barcenilla, Head of Travel Business Line at Allianz Partners Spain, shared in the 'Family Stays' panel within the 'Targeting Traveler Segments' space, organized by UNWTO at FITUR 2025.
In it, Fernando Barcenilla highlighted that families' priorities when traveling are budget control, safety, destination accessibility, and ease of access to medical services. Families with children prefer sun and beach destinations, followed by cruises, theme parks, and major European cities due to the appeal of their cultural and tourist offerings.
Meanwhile, the biggest concern for families in this year 2025 remains the economic situation, mainly driven by inflation. Safety during travel is also a concern due to recent international conflicts, weather conditions caused by climate change, or the overcrowding of tourism in the most popular destinations.
Additionally, families are the population group that makes the most use of travel agencies (35%), only behind seniors (55%), due to the support and help they offer, personalization, service convenience, and the possibility of setting a fixed price. They are also the group that most frequently purchases travel insurance during their vacations to ensure coverage for possible accidents, guarantee medical assistance, reimbursement in case of cancellation, or luggage issues.
"In 2025, global tourism will continue to grow, and families will be an essential segment to drive the sector," explained Fernando Barcenilla, adding that "in this international context marked by uncertainty, the most important thing is to ensure safety and protection during travel to be able to react appropriately to possible unforeseen events. At Allianz Partners, we offer the necessary coverage through our insurance so that families can travel without worries anywhere in the world."
