Infanta Sofía, about to do it: Queen Letizia on edge over her youngest daughter

Infanta Sofía is getting ready to take a key step while Letizia closely follows a move that could change everything

Coming of age brings new responsibilities. For those who have grown up under the public eye, every choice takes on greater significance. In the Spanish royal family, even the most private matters also generate great anticipation.

Queen Letizia experiences the situations that arise within the family intensely, although she tries to do so discreetly. With Infanta Sofía moving forward on her path to maturity, she knows well that some decisions can no longer wait. This time, what is at stake carries great historical and family weight.

Infanta Sofía will have to make an important decision

In 2009, Menorcan businessman Juan Ignacio Balada left his estate to the King and Queen and their eight grandchildren. Among his assets is a mansion of more than 5,920 sq. ft. (550 m²) in Ciutadella. The property remains closed, but in perfect condition thanks to a maintenance company.

For years, the City Council requested to use the property as a social center or supervised housing. The requests did not succeed, since the heirs, mostly minors, could not decide. "The answer is that it belongs to the emeritus's grandchildren," local sources explained.

Now, with Sofía coming of age, everything could change. She was the last to reach that legal status. Her signature, along with her cousins', will be key to defining the future of the property.

King Felipe wants to wait

At a reception in the Marivent gardens, the King was clear: "We have to wait until next year." With these words, it is very clear that the determination of the inheritance's future will remain undecided. Then it will be known whether he will renounce his share of the inheritance or not.

Felipe VI and Letizia already gave up theirs to the Hesperia Foundation in 2010. As they confirmed at the time, it would be "entirely allocated to social purposes." The same is now expected of their daughters.

The mansion was valued at 1.5 million euros when an attempt was made to sell it in 2017. There are also other assets that are part of that inheritance: ten homes, a garage, a commercial space, and a block of eight apartments. This building, in particular, stands out for its history and its location in the heart of Menorca.

A choice that defines a new role

This family matter already occupies a place on Sofía's agenda. The decision can no longer be postponed, and Letizia is alert, closely accompanying this important step for her younger daughter.

Everything indicates that the Infanta will soon stop being on the sidelines. What she does will mark her active entry into royal family matters. That is very desired among both supporters and detractors.
