Up to -5 ºC: in these cities of Spain, they're going to be very cold next weekend

Temperatures in Spain are expected to vary in the coming days and will drop by Saturday.

The anticyclone has returned atmospheric stability for a few days, but it has also reinforced the nighttime cold. During the last few early mornings, several capitals have recorded subzero temperatures, with Teruel being one of the coldest with lows of -4°C (24.8°F). This pattern will continue in the coming days, and frosts could intensify with the arrival of a continental cold air mass.

Nighttime cold with frosts and milder highs

Despite such low nighttime temperatures, the highs aren't particularly cold in most areas. The thermal contrast between day and night is notable, with clear skies and relatively mild conditions during the central hours.

Starting Friday, a change in temperatures is expected. The arrival of an Atlantic front will bring rain and cloudiness, which will cause a rise in the lows, as the cloud cover prevents the heat accumulated during the day from escaping as easily.

However, on Saturday, with the entry of a continental-origin cold air mass, temperatures will drop again, especially in the northern half of the country.

The cold will be more intense on Saturday

The thermal drop will be especially noticeable in the minimum temperatures, affecting several provincial capitals in the interior of the peninsula more intensely. AEMET has already indicated which localities will reach lower values.

On Saturday, the cold will be more pronounced in Castilla y León and Aragón, with minimum temperatures reaching -3°C (26.6°F) in some cities like Ávila, Segovia, Valladolid, and Zamora. In Teruel and Burgos, the thermometer will drop to -4°C (24.8°F), while in Soria, Palencia, and León, it will reach -5°C (23°F).

On Sunday, although the general trend will show a slight rise in the lows, the cold will remain prominent. Teruel will repeat with values close to -4°C (24.8°F), while Soria will be the only provincial capital where -5°C (23°F) will be maintained. Other cities that recorded subzero values on Saturday will experience a slight increase, ranging between -2°C (28.4°F) and 1°C (33.8°F).

Attention to frosts and wind chill: we'll feel very cold

The combination of low temperatures and lack of cloudiness during the night will favor the formation of frosts, especially in areas of the interior peninsula. Additionally, in some places, the wind could increase the wind chill, making the cold even more noticeable.

Authorities recommend taking precautions against this thermal drop, especially on roads where ice patches could cause circulation problems. It's also important to protect crops and pipes in areas most affected by frosts.
