Buckingham Palace no longer hides the bad vibes with Charles III and Camilla: they've left

An unexpected departure, growing unrest, and signs that can no longer be hidden within the palace walls

Charles III and Camilla are royals who divide opinions and have provided many headlines since the time of the rumors about Charles's infidelity. However, their public presence is followed by all the spotlights and, for citizens, is loaded with symbolism.

Although every move the couple makes is observed, questioned, and, many times, criticized. It's easy for their public decisions to be analyzed; however, when private matters come to light, speculation arises. This time, the signs point to a tension that's now impossible to hide.

Charles III and the demand supported by Camilla

Highgrove House is the king's country residence, located in Gloucestershire County, known for its extensive and well-kept gardens. This place with beautiful gardens has lost almost all its gardening staff; in three years, 11 out of 12 employees have resigned. The working conditions weren't the best or the desired ones for the workers.

In 2022, the gardeners earned only £8.90 per hour, the country's minimum wage, but lower than the pay in other gardens. At first, for the workers, working for the king seemed like a privilege. However, they soon discovered it didn't make up for the effort.

Gardening under Charles III's scrutiny

Charles III is known for being demanding, especially when it comes to gardening. "Get that man out of my sight," he said after a mistake with a flower; another worker was corrected for mislabeling a Japanese shrub. He got the label back with the mistake marked and a curt "No!"; every plant had to be perfect and well identified.

He also demanded answers about wilted flowers or incorrect pruning. "Why were the labels with the names of his favorite magnolia missing?" was one of his usual questions. Even the feeding of his delphiniums with algae had to follow his orders to the letter.

Beyond the flowers: Camilla and Charles III are in a complicated environment

Tom Bower in Rebel Prince, a biography written in 2018 about Charles as Prince of Wales, recounted extreme details of that environment. Gardeners lying face down pulled weeds without using chemicals. He even mentions that there were nightly rounds to remove slugs by hand.

In 2023, faced with the staff exodus, the King's Foundation, in charge of the gardens since 2012, requested an audit. Psychological support and a salary review were recommended. But according to Times, the problems remain unsolved.

What should be a royal refuge today could start to become abandoned and neglected. There are situations that, even if one tries to keep them private, always come to light.
